Forest School is a unique learning opportunity for the children here at the Opportunity Centre. It has its roots in Denmark – in the 1990s a group of students visited forest schools in Denmark and were so inspired that they set up a training programme for Early Years Practitioners at Bridgewater College in the UK.
The Forest School approach, despite its name, can be developed anywhere – it is an ethos that focuses on learning from nature. Play is developed in natural surroundings and environmental consciousness is encouraged in all children.
Children are supported to develop their self-esteem, confidence, problem solving, risk and challenge skills, alongside communication, physical, mathematical and scientific skills. It may look your child is just simply playing, however consider the learning potential of making shelters, mark making in mud, listening to the different sounds in nature, learning about how to take care of our environment and working as part of a team. Forest School inspires your little ones to become resilient independent, inquiring and creative learners.
Forest School happens throughout the week at the Opportunity Centre, with even our under 2s having access to our wild play area. Our little site is a work in progress and all sessions are coordinated by our Forest School Leader. It is used throughout the year so children can experience nature and seasons first hand.
Forest School takes place come rain or shine. Remember there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing! We do have full waterproofs for all children but please make sure your child has plenty of layers in their bag so they can keep warm and have fun!
