Our story

The story of the Forest of Dean Children's Opportunity Centre

The Forest of Dean Children’s Opportunity Centre was set up in 1982 as a registered Charity (No. 284975) in Gloucestershire to serve the Forest of Dean district; a predominantly rural area with four small market towns, bordering Herefordshire and Monmouthshire.

Since then, we have offered early years support and care for all children from birth to school age.

In the 1980s, families were often socially and geographically isolated within their communities. So from the outset our philosophy was that children with any additional need should be able to play, learn and develop alongside peers in a setting that is accessible to all. To that end, the Opportunity Centre still endeavours to maintain a 50:50 ratio of children who attend the Centre with no needs alongside their peers who have a SEN.

The Centre is an early years setting providing support to the whole family.

Our promise

Today, we offer early years support and care for all children from birth to school age. We have an experienced, highly qualified staff team who can support children and families with any aspect of their child’s learning and development.

We fully engage and support to ensure each child reaches their full potential and encourage them to move forward with their independence for learning in the future.

The provision and delivery of our services is supported by staff with the knowledge, skills and expertise to provide an inclusive, stimulating environment in which children and families can thrive.

The support we offer

The Opportunity Centre is open all year round and service delivery takes place as and where necessary, whether at the Centre, in family homes, at a shared setting, or in hospital.

We are able to support with the Gloucestershire Graduated Pathway for children to receive an Education, Health and Care Plan if their needs are ongoing and will need support into mainstream education or specialist provision.

We accept referrals from parents, healthcare providers and other settings who are unable to meet children’s needs.

We have strong links with external professionals and local settings and schools to ensure transitions for children are as smooth and enjoyable an experience as possible.
