A DAY AT THE OPPORTUNITY CENTRE

Here at The Opportunity Centre we are delighted to offer childcare for children from 3 months to 5 years.  We are passionate about giving each child the best start during their early years and work hard to ensure all children are safe and happy in our care.

Our setting is a happy, lively place as you would expect of any preschool. We have the experience and facilities to look after all children including those who need extra support.  The Opportunity Centre continues to work hard to break down the barriers that exist between children with additional needs and those without.  By  focusing on your child and their personality first, we can then consider any extra support which can be put in place.

For new starters you can download our application form from the menu where you will find all the information you need to access childcare with us.  Whether you are new to the centre or returning for another year, we can’t wait to welcome you and your family to The Opportunity Centre.

Arrival and Collection

At The Opportunity Centre, we have three areas of childcare, Under 2’s, Rising 3’s and Pre-school. We focus primarily on your child’s abilities and not necessarily their age, meaning we create the best opportunities to learn. All our children come together to play throughout the day, however each child begins and ends the day in their own room.

Sessions begin at 9am (unless you have prearranged for your child to start at an earlier time). Please make every effort to be prompt so that your child is here to start the session with their friends.   A member of staff will unlock the gate or door and be available to invite you in.

Under 2’s Room

Please enter through the conservatory door.

Rising 3’s

Please enter through the bottom gate as if going to reception and then take the gate to your left.

Preschool

Please enter through the top gate onto the playground.

Please encourage your child in Rising 3’s or Preschool to be as independent as possible and carry their own bag and lunchbox.  Staff will sign your child in, please let a member of staff know who is picking your child up.

All gates and doors will be locked after 9am for security reasons.  If you are running late you will need to enter through reception.   If you have any admin or payments queries, please come into reception before or after you have dropped your child off.

Sessions end at either 12pm or 3pm. For 12pm pick-ups please come to the area outside reception, 3pm pick-ups are from the top the top gate. Staff will open our top gate and you will be invited into our outdoor play area to wait for your child. Please try to arrive on time as late collection can cause both inconvenience and concern to staff. If you are going to be late please ring the centre on 01594 837552 as soon as possible. Please let our staff know if anyone other than yourself will be collecting your child. We ask that you let us know about anyone who may collect your child regularly on our registration forms. We use a safe word system if we do not know the person collecting your child.

Settling Your Child into Early Years

We aim to be flexible in our arrangement, working with parents to ensure a smooth start, your child’s Key Person will work with you to discuss the most appropriate arrangements.

What to wear

Although we use aprons, we recommend you dress your child in cloths that will not be spoilt if they get paint or other craft materials on them. Try to avoid complicated belts, braces, and dungarees as these can impede children going to the toilet independently. We do have a uniform of purple polo shirts and jumpers/hoodies, this is completely optional, but we do find that it helps the children identify that they are going to pre-school and that they are part of a group. Clothing can be ordered via www.myclothing.com. Please do not bring your child in flip flops and if bad weather necessitates the wearing of wellies, please bring some suitable indoor footwear for them to change into.
Children need to bring in one rucksack style back containing a complete set of spare cloths and nappies, wet wipes and nappy sacks if required. Please do not worry if your child is in the process of learning to use the toilet, we can support everything you are doing at home, please speak to a member of staff/ child’s Key Worker to ensure we are following the same routine as you.

The Great Outdoors

Getting outside everyday – come rain or shine- is part of our ethos at The Opportunity Centre. Please make sure your child is wearing weather appropriate clothing, i.e. warm and comfortable, with a waterproof coat and layers for colder days and a sun hat and sun cream for the summer. If possible, please can you leave a spare pare of wellies on your child’s peg at the Centre as we regularly splash in puddles whatever the season!
